Don’t Choose Abbreviations While Registering a Domain Name

Domain name is very important and choosing a right domain name is important too. Recently I have came across some company domain names which were using abbreviations of a particular word which I thought is not appropriate as it causes difficulty in naming a domain name by the customers and even the own members of a company.

Some examples:

1. GRP: for group
2. MGMT: for management
3. Co: for company (It’s OK. But, a domain name owner with ‘co’ at end should also try to get ‘company’ as its end word in a particular domain name.
4. MKTG: for marketing

Undoubtedly, there are many such words which can be abbreviated. If you’ve no option then go for abbreviation word which is well known such as Inc for incorporation and Co for company. With the release of new gTLDS and existing TLDs plus the ccTLDs the options are many and it’s likely that you can get your hands on a name that may serve your business purpose.

Always, bear in mind, that there is aftermarket of domain names where you can find a domain name which you may be looking for. So, don’t rule out this option. Choosing a good domain name is a one time process. If you build your business empire on a wrong domain name then the cost of acquiring a suitable domain name and then shifting all your web resources from the old domain to a new domain will be more.

Hence, it’s important that the first time itself, you brainstorm all the ideas before finalizing a domain name and don’t forget that a abbreviation which may be clear to you may not be clear to your customers.
